Bill Sahlman
was born in Barre, Vermont. My younger years growing up in Vermont
were in a school that had 8 classes in 4 rooms. In my graduation
class from 8th grade their were about 100 kids from the Barre Town
School system. These were scattered out in 4 different locations around
the city of Barre. The graduation class had 10%of the
class made up of twins. 5 sets with 3 of those sets coming from my
school with a class of 20.
Life in Vermont
was very enjoyable. Winter were spent hunting rabbits or skiing.
Sugarbush in Warren, Vt.was just being built and weekends training was
run thru the Eastern Mtn. Ski Association in Stowe. Many weekend were
spent skiing on the Morse Farm outside of Montpelier.Today the Morse
Farm is nationally known for their Sugar Shack. If youget a chance to
go, stop and say hello to Burr and his family. It is well worth the
trip. Burr and his siblings are the grand children of Senator George
Aiken.
The Senator was quite instrumental in
our move from Vermont at the age of 14. My father was a very involved in
the running of the Washington Electric Cooperative in E. Montpelier, Vt.
Because of his knowledge, Senator Aiken recommended him to President
John Kennedy to become the head of the International Cooperative
Development Program in the Agency for International Development. This is
how we ended up in junior high school in Arlington, Virginia.
Moving
from a school of 60to a junior high school of 1,500 was very trumatic.
However, being atwin certainly helped us to get acquainted. The high
school years were fast and exciting. Class mates included the sisters of
Katie Kouric and lots of senator's and congressman's children.
Interesting, was the fact that some of kids who had lived there all
their lives had never been to the Washington Monument or the museums,
etc. We use to do it all. Jazz concerts under the Lincoln Memorial were
especially fun in the summer.
Graduation from high school I started college at Utah State University. My program
was in Landscape Architecture but my real avocation was skiing at Park
City and Alta on the weekends. The vacations were spent at Jackson Hole
and Sun Valley or going off to California with friends.Traveling thought Las Vegas and Reno in the 60's was quite different from today.
Of course the arch over entrance to Reno has not changed.During the
middle of my junior year, I decided I needed a change and transferred to
the University of Massachusetts. Little did I know at the time that all
of the freshman classes at Utah which were waived would be required to
graduate in Massachusetts. So as a senior I became a freshman all over
again. So once again I decided I needed some outside entertainment.
Thus I became a cheerleader for my senior year. This allowed us to front
row seats at every game. Basketball was especially exciting because Dr.
J. was just getting started with basketball career. Senior year ended
early because of the Kent State massacre and I moved back to Virginia
for the summer.
The summer ended and I
packed up and headed west to Squaw Valley,California. The next 4 years
were spent working in the restaurant business and just enjoying the
life. My older brother Frank came tovisit and has been there ever
since. If you happen to be in Sqauw, he can be found at the INN SHOP.
The shop only rents skis as they closed the retail shop some years ago.
Skis can be rented often times up into June.
Knowing
that without luck or money, I would never get ahead I packed up one day
and headed East to Virginia.I was fortunate to get on with the subway
constrution and eventually found the business that I knew suited me
best. I kept seeing these people renovating house on Capital Hill and
just knew I wanted to do that. My first house was bought down the street
from Howard University. The mayor liver around the corner and his house
had a 24 hour armed guard. It was not the smartest choice but the
neighbors were very good to me. And by the end of the year, with lots of
yelling the drug pushers were no longer coming up the street. The next
year I decided it might be safer if I was up on Capital Hill with all of
the other guys. Amazingly enough I was never threatened or robbed in any
of the locations that I worked and many of many friends were all of the
time.
I was still skiing and of all of a
sudden I met the woman who would be my wife. 26 years later we are still
together, even after 19 moves. The early years were spent in Virginia,
but when Jeremy was born we decided we would come back to Vermont.
Stephanie came along 2 years later and was born here Upper Valley. Both
kids grew up in Norwich, Vermont.Jeremy was a snowboarder,
skateboarder and ski instructor. Jeremy went to Northeastern
University in Boston and recently moved to Santa Monica, California where
he works as a Computer Animation programmer.Stephanie graduated last
year from the University of Vermont. During college she spent every
summer on the road. Traveling across country twice by herself to jobs
in Colorado, to traveling all over Europe one summer. Part of one
summer was spent in Cuba. Today she is working with Americorp in
Arkansas. Her specialty is disaster relief and so she was in Florida
during the hurricane season and then to So Carolina in January for the
train wreck.
My wife Peggy and I are very
proud of our children and honestly believe their growing up on the farm
in Norwich made them what they are today. The life in Vermont ends to
make kids independent and not afraid to take risk. It is a good life
even with the ever changing environment. Lots of people have moved here
over the last 25 years. All and all, I think it is good for Vermont and
New Hampshire. If you make the choice to come here, let us here at C-21
Energy Shield Realty be of assistance to you. I am sure you will be
glad you did.
